Tying Our Hands Together

By: Angela Vargas

At EGP, we share a great interest in helping those in need. We are encouraged to become involved in our community, where we can be known as family. Did you know you can be part of a big community in your hometown? Here in Dallas, there are many groups and events in which you can join as a good cause. The purpose of this article is to provide you with a background as to what students, parents, or even visitors can do to contribute to a local community school. This article will try to answer the question as to what we can do here at EGP to promote relations with inner and outer community resources? After all, stronger families and student learning both come because of a result of individuals supporting communities!

Middle school and high school students living in the Dallas area have many opportunities for community service, both during summer and the school year. Community service helps those who serve by building strong employment skills. It can also open students’ eyes to a new passion or interest. There are many places to serve.  For example, afterschool programs, recreation centers, and non-profit organizations all contribute to community partnerships.

Any student at EGP is more than welcome to contribute by first setting a goal to become a leader. Organizing a fundraiser or volunteering for school events are great ways to promote unity and servant leadership. Since the beginning of the school year, I have noticed great support from our upper-grade students who seek to ensure the younger students are walked into the building. You may be wondering if little movements like those are considered a community relationship. Yes! It all begins here at East Grand Preparatory. It is also awesome to have parents from our very own school volunteering to help in the morning carline!

Volunteering improves the social development of everyone and encourages others to join.

Everyone is encouraged to seek opportunities in which they can provide support for others. As any other school, there are exciting field trips to come throughout the school year. If you are a parent and wish to volunteer, we encourage you to join our school community. Volunteering is a very important foundation at EGP. Not only do we encourage volunteerism inside our school, we also encourage it outside the school walls, as well.

Here is a list of some programs where there are opportunities to grow and support:

State Fair of Texas

North Texas Food Bank

Within EGP, we are having Red Ribbon week from October 21st-25th. During this week, we are raising awareness against drugs. Students are encouraged to participate in a creative dress code for the whole week. With many other schools participating together, our community is growing and promoting positivity.

Let’s set partnerships with a large engaging group focused to contribute and improve our own community here at EGP! Remember, teens, children or even adults who are willing to partner together with outside resources is key to building tons of support and social skills between EGP and your local community centers. It is truly rewarding for everyone to see unity within our family at EGP and our outside neighbors.
