In the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA), many players have been retired, but very few have impacted the people or a city the way Dirk Nowitzki did. The city of Dallas, home town of the Mavericks, was counting the days that the legend and most beloved player, Dirk Nowitzki, will hang his shoes and retire. He did exactly this on April 10, 2019. After 21 years playing for Dallas, the 14-time all-star is leaving an emptiness that no one will be able to fill.
Dirk Nowitzki was born in Wurzburg, Germany on June 19, 1978. His parents, Jorge and Helga Werner, had little knowledge of the impact of his birth and what it would bring to the world of professional athletics. Dirk began playing basketball at the age of 13 and he was drafted in 1998 by the Milwaukee Bucks. However, he was soon traded to the Mavericks. In his 21 years as a Maverick, Dirk married Ms. Jessica Olsson and had three children: Malaika Nowitzki, Max Nowitzki, and Morris Nowitzki. In the NBA, he won the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 2007, was an NBA champion in 2011, played in 15 NBA playoffs, earned the most points by a Maverick player, and was the third basketball player to record at least 31,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, 1,000 steals, 1,000 blocks and 1,000 three-point field goals.
On behalf of the city of Dallas, Texas and all the Maverick’s fans, thank you Dirk Nowitzki, for all your years enriching the sport of basketball and representing our city around the world.
